CALLICARPA DICHOTOMAHI..can anyone tell me what zone 5 - 8 means, I want to try and grow Beauty Berry seeds in Scotland ?
The zoning system is used in America to offer a guide to gardeners about weather variations and the start of seasons across the country. Its a little bit like the variations between north/south in our own country except to a larger degree.
Collect your seeds now for planting in march in 3 inch pots towards the end of April plant them out in moist soil for flowers in Sept/Oct.Park seeds offer a variety called ';Beauty berry Early Amethyst'; an early bloomer that is easier to grow.Or try soft wood cuttings in the normal way.HI..can anyone tell me what zone 5 - 8 means, I want to try and grow Beauty Berry seeds in Scotland ?
Zone 5 Temperatures of 0 degr.F and lower are uncommon.
Zone 6 Slightly warmer than Zone 5.
Zone 7 Hot summers and mild winters typical winter lows range from 23 degr. to 9 degr.F.
Zone 8 Slightly warmer than Zone 7 with winter temperatures from 22 degr. to 14 degr. F
Callicarpa grows outdoors in the south of Great Britain. However the Callicarpa dichotoma will grow in Zone 1-6 according to ';Sunset Western Garden Book';. You will only know whether your plan will succeed when you try. That's what makes gardening so interesting. The easiest way to propagate the Callicarpa is by taking cuttings.
Scotland would probably have about the equivalent of a Zone 6 climate by North American standards. You should be able to grow this plant in Scotland if that is it zonal range.
Each growing climate is broken down into zones. This maps out temp, length of sunlight, rain fall etc. If you go into your garden store they will give you your local zone. Tried to look it up for you but Scotland has a couple zones.
