Do you think that media truly sways people's' perceptions of beauty?

We have to write an editorial on how the media distorts perceptions of beauty but I disagree. I think that people have their individual opinions no matter what is shown by the media.

What do you think?Do you think that media truly sways people's' perceptions of beauty?
Yes. but without you even knowing it. Its not like the media yells out ';YOU NEED TO LOOK LIKE THIS.'; its more like subliminal messages almost. Things like when a tabloid or any of the TV shows that involve talking about stars say ';wow... look at tyra bank's cellulite! she's so fat now!'; and then they say ';Look at _______ movie star/model and how perfect her body is.';

The truth is...there is no ';perfect'; body. The perfect body in the media and TV comes from airbrushing and properly positioned lighting to only show the features that look best and to hide things like Cellulite, Stretch Marks, Spider Veins or any other unsightly thing that happens to someones body (same goes for men.)

If the media did not sway people's veiws of what is beautiful then things like being a size 13 (like Marilyn Monroe) would still be beautiful but now the standard is being a size 0-3 as ideal. If fashion was not trying to sway what is beautiful then their models would vary in sizes and have a body to fit into the outfit. Now the idea of beauty involves being as stick thin as possible even if it means you have no chest or booty. For a woman, those are our features, so to advertise clothes without that makes many younger generations feel they have to look like that. not to mention the fact that not much clothing out there today is true to size. a Large is actually a Medium and a Medium a Small. ect ect.

If media did not impact our idea of what is beautiful I think that there would not have been a huge spike in eating disorders and additionally there would be MANY less models that DIE every year from ED's and the pressure to be skinny. I mean.... for example Janis Dickens Modeling Agency show. She tells women who have 3-4 extra pounds which are not even noticeable that they are ';FAT';. not that they arent ';tone.'; but they are FAT!!! she also says ';your boobs are too big or you have a huge ***';. Making these girls 100% ashamed of their assets when she herself is old and wrinkly and has had one too many face lifts, neck lifts, breast lifts, lipos, tummy tucks and looks like she stuck her finger in a light socket.Do you think that media truly sways people's' perceptions of beauty?
I think yes. The media brands whatever is in fashion as beautiful.

Look at how fashion changes over the generations- yes it comes back in fashion, but at each stage that is what is considered hot.

if you see someone in juicy sweatpants and uggs people are going to judge and say eww that's so 90s or whatever, but in the 90s that was considered HOT.

I think we are going to see more ethnicities on the runway now that obama is president.
i dont agree with you

i mean yeah there are SOME ppl that have there own way of thinking no matter what the media says BUT you say ppl in general or atleast the majority has its own view of beauty and i think that yeah the media influence ppl too much on its opinion think about it why do for all females want to be skinny and have big boobs and stuff huh?
the media does lead people to believe that most people in the public eye are beautiful even though they know that these people are all made up with hair and makeup that take sometimes 2 hours to apply before they are camera ready. If you notice stars are never on tv without makeup if they were you would not know who they were.
No think that if you look at someone in real life and they are attractive you know it. First instinct isn't ';wow he doesn't look like Brad pitt, so not hot'; We think, he is not attractive to me because of my prefferences...
yes the media can sway a persons opinion, so many people have weak minds and buy into what the media tells them. thats why so many kids, teens and even adults only care about looks and money.
Everyone has their different opinions, and anyone can say whats attractive and what's not.We're all beautiful inside.
Yes, but it does so in very subtle ways. Essentially, the media keeps us informed about what is ';normal.';
Sure it does - retouching photos of people, for instance.
